What's an Avatar?
Avatars are created when a pony has lots of magic supressed inside his body and this pony is not an Unicorn, neither an Alicorn (Only Earth Ponies and Pegasi can acquire Avatars). In Dark Knight's case is because his mother and father were both Alicorns and he is an Earth Pony. The Alicorn Blood pumps in his veins making these transformation possible, but rare. The Avatars are beings made of pure magic energy.
How Avatars can be conjured?
Depends on the host. Many cases points to this: By feeling powerful emotions such as: Hate, Anger, Love, Compassion.

That is pretty damn interesting, though I'm guessing the reason why unicorns don't get these is because they can use their magic all the time, whereas it only builds up in pegasi and earth ponies. Well thought out.
